Recalling her shattered dream from the past, she said how her father had torn up the application form to Queen Mary’s College, five decades ago. So, after her retirement she enrolled herself at Tamil Nadu Open University to get her post-graduate degree in History.

In a remarkable achievement, a woman got her master’s degree at the age of 67. The Chennai woman, identified as M. Chellathai, wanted to pursue higher education but was not allowed first by her father and then by the husband. She, however, kept her desire alive all through her life. So, after her retirement as a clerk, she enrolled herself at Tamil Nadu Open University to get her post-graduate degree in History.

An 11-member Governing Council of Laweh Open University College has been inaugurated in Accra to oversee the effective administration of the university as a world-class facility. 

The new Governing Council, chaired by Dr Kingsley Fletcher (HRM Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I), is expected to work with both national and international partners to position the university to achieve its vision of being a world-class open higher education provider founded on the principle of useful and applied learning.

A statement issued in Accra named the rest of the members as a former Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, Professor Vincent Ado Tenebe; the Vice-Chancellor of University of Mines and Technology Tarkwa, Professor J. S. Y. Kuma; a former Vice-Chancellor of the Open University Tanzania, Professor Con. Eng. Tolly S.A Mbwette; a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor Joshua Alabi and the Dean of the Centre for International Education and Collaboration of the UPSA  and also Vice Chair of the African Network for the Internationalisation of Education (ANIE), Professor Goski Alabi.

The rest are a Legal Practitioner and Lecturer at the UPSA, Ms Mavis Ekua E. Kwainoe; the Dean of Business school of the Open University of Zimbabwe, Professor Jemison Kurasha; the Director of Centre for Distance Learning and Open Schooling (CENDLOS), Dr Joshua Mallet and the Director of Research and Planning of the Association of African Universities (AAU), Professor Jonathan Mbah.

Education without barriers

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the university college, Dr Josiah Cobbah, said the its philosophy was to provide an opportunity for education without barriers to produce strategic middle to strategic level leaders to be responsible for their own learning and personal transformation.

“We take pride in our ability to work with students with diverse background to harness their potential by identifying, nurturing and turning talents into abilities to contribute their quota to world affairs,” he stated.

Dr Cobbah expressed confidence in the Council, saying they were all achievers in their various fields of endeavour and urged them to bring their rich experiences to bear in the governance of the university.

The Chairman of the Governing Council, HRM Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I, on behalf of the members, thanked the university for the confidence reposed in them.

He assured the university they would offer selfless service in line with the strategic focus of the university to bring more value to all stakeholders.

Laweh Open University College

Laweh Open University College is located at Addogon, Nungua, and plans to establish regional study centres across the subregion. 

The ceremony was also graced by Noble Dr King Odaifio Welentsi III, the Paramount Chief of the Nungua Traditional Area; Obrimpong Numa Nii Alabi Dzenge, the Nungua Mankralo and Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana.


As the demand for university education increases, the trend of tertiary education in the country has also taken a new dimension with the emergence of Open Universities (OU) across the country.The goal of Open Universities is to offer everyone equal opportunity to develop their competences, to raise their level of education and to receive retraining. Currently two universities–Laweh Open University and the Accra Institute of Technology–operate Open University systems in the country

The Accra Institute of Technology’s Open University programme is affiliated to the Open University of Malaysia. Laweh Open University is global partner with the Franklin University, USA, for the award of its degrees, diplomas and certificates.
